The book tells about the versatile artistic life which flourished in the capital of Georgia during the 1910s-1930s. Compared with world metropolises, Tiflis (now Tbilisi) was a city of a small scale, but it nevertheless used the whole of its cultural arsenal to assimilate Modernist aspirations. In the 1910s and 1920s, Georgia gave important figures to the world Avant-garde art. Their names and creative heritage are organic parts of epoch-making artistic events of that time. Modernism was successful in Georgia like one big successful performance. It left a strong trace in Georgian culture and art that could not be erased, not even by the fierce attacks against it launched by the totalitarian Soviet regime.
